The Power of Your Subconscious Mind – Joseph Murphy

Mon, Feb 14, 2011

Joseph Murphy has taken religious prayer and mantra and defined it as the invocation of the subconscious. A word of warning to those of you who do not agree with religion: this book is written by a religious man and is squarely based on his belief in Jesus and God. If you are able to ignore the basis for Murphy’s belief, you will be able to get something useful out of the book.

The subconscious, according to Joseph Murphy, is a “treasure house” of personal power that can be accessed through the power of prayer and imagination. Once it has been directed towards a task, it will do whatever is needed to accomplish that task, no matter what it takes, making almost anything possible.

Murphy lays out much of his theory of how the subconscious works in the first two chapters, and the in chapter eight discusses how to practically engage this power. The remainder of the book is packed with anecdote after anecdote to illustrate the use of this power. The book is much like a seminar or very long talk, light on theory and heavy on stories acting to persuade and rally.

One thing that did strike me, is the insistence that the subconscious should be serving your goals, almost like a slave at your disposal to do whatever you wish it to do. There is very little on how to listen to your subconscious and the deep guidance that might flow from it to guide you to your purpose, with no mention of the power of meditation and methods for silencing the mind.
